《法華經》卷一．序品第一：LOTUS SUTRA-2：菩薩眾（一）

菩薩摩訶薩八萬人，皆於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提不退轉。

There were eighty thousand bodhisattvas, great ones, all free from backsliding in the pursuit of supreme awakening.

菩薩摩訶薩八萬人，

「菩薩」，此云道心。

「摩訶薩」，此云大眾生。[1]

皆於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提，不退轉。

「阿耨多羅」，此云無上。

「三藐」，此云正等；「正」以簡邪，「等」謂平等。佛與眾生，其性無二。

「三菩提」，此云正覺；「正」能「覺」了一切諸法。

「不退轉」有三：[2]一、位次不退減，二、功行不退怯，三、正念不退失。[3]
